Established in 1911

The story of Borenius began in 1911, when two young lawyers, Cajus Holma and Ilmari Palmén, embarked on a journey that would leave a lasting mark on legal practice in Finland. They founded Attorneys-at-Law Palmén & Holma – a firm specialising in family, inheritance, and insurance law. A few years later, Palmén departed, paving the way for Heikki Borenius Sr. to join as a partner, and the firm was reborn as Attorneys-at-Law Holma & Borenius.

By the 1930s, Heikki Borenius Sr. had taken the helm, renaming the firm to Attorney-at-Law Heikki Borenius and expanding its reputation in civil, contract, and corporate law, as well as high-profile criminal cases.

As Finland emerged from the shadows of war in the 1940s, the firm experienced a surge in corporate and contract law cases. The addition of partners like Henrik Castrén and the involvement of Heikki Antero Borenius marked a period of growth, evolving the firm into Attorneys-at-Law Borenius & Castrén. The post-war reconstruction in the 1950s brought rapid growth, and the firm became known as Attorneys-at-Law Borenius & Borenius, with Heikki Borenius Jr. stepping into a leadership role.

The 1960s marked a new chapter as the firm welcomed Kullervo Kemppinen as a partner, becoming Attorneys at Law Borenius & Kemppinen. Its client base expanded to major businesses and industrial enterprises, while its partners shaped the legal landscape through roles in associations and arbitration boards.

By the 1980s, the firm was at the forefront of cases involving large-scale construction projects and corporate liability. When economic challenges struck in the early 1990s, the firm assisted clients with restructuring, and later on high-tech sector listings.

In 2011, the firm celebrated its centenary, adopting the name Attorneys-at-Law Borenius, and by 2017, the name evolved into Borenius Attorneys Ltd. Strengthening its global presence, Borenius expanded internationally by establishing representative offices in New York (2012) and London (2020).
