Annika Smalén

Annika has in-depth experience in insolvency assignments and she advises our clients on all questions related to insolvency law and distressed financing. Annika has been involved in several of the most complex and extensive insolvency law assignments in the Finnish market. She has also acted as a bankruptcy estate administrator and a public receiver.

In addition, Annika assists our clients in dispute resolution matters, such as recovery actions, debt collection, criminal proceedings, and company-law-related disputes. She has also acted as an arbitrator.

Annika joined Borenius in 2021, and previously she worked at the Office of the Bankruptcy Ombudsman. As a senior bankruptcy lawyer, Annika was in charge of supervising the administration of bankruptcy estates and restructuring proceedings.

Annika has also worked as an attorney at two other Finnish law firms where she specialised in insolvency law and dispute resolution. Annika is an approved mediator for the Finnish Bar Association, and she has been serving as one of the secretaries of the Finnish Bar Association’s Examination Committee since 2016.

Annika holds a Licentiate Degree in Law from the University of Helsinki, and her thesis on bankruptcy estate administrator’s independent authority passed with distinction. She also studied law at Stockholm University in Sweden. Annika regularly lectures on topics in her areas of expertise.
