Borenius Maps Its Carbon Footprint – Vast Majority of Emissions Are Indirect
We have now published our 2024 carbon footprint, covering all our offices in Helsinki, Tampere, London, and New York. The calculation was carried out in accordance with the internationally recognised Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), aligning directly with the emissions reporting requirements of the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

The total carbon footprint for 2024 was 1,356 tCO₂e. Direct emissions (Scope 1) represented just 0.2%, purchased energy (Scope 2) 0.5%, and the remaining 99.3% came from other indirect sources (Scope 3), such as procurement, business travel, and employee commuting.
Key emission sources included:
- Purchased goods and services: 860 tCO₂e (63.4%)
- Business travel: 413 tCO₂e (30.5%)
- Commuting: 66 tCO₂e (4.9%)
Scope 1 emissions stemmed from hybrid company cars. In Scope 2, the Helsinki office used zero-emission electricity and district heating, meaning all parent company energy emissions originated from the Tampere office. We have now renewed our electricity contract in Tampere to use renewable energy, which will further reduce our energy-related emissions.
