Borenius Investment Subsidies Team Advised on Four CRMA Strategic Project Applications

Our new Investment Subsidies team has made a strong start and been well received by clients. The team has advised four projects on their Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) strategic project applications to the EU Commission in the second application round, which closed on 15 January 2026. Additionally, in autumn 2025, the team successfully assisted three clients in obtaining clean transition investment tax credits from Business Finland, with all three receiving positive funding decisions.

The Critical Raw Materials Act enables projects to apply for strategic project status, providing access to streamlined permitting and enhanced support for projects critical to Europe’s raw materials supply chain. Borenius advised four projects in the second application round. In the first round, we advised Anglo American on its successful application.

State aid schemes have become crucial for supporting large investment projects and foreign direct investment. Designation as a project of national or EU importance provides access to prioritised status and various forms of state aid and financing. Since launching in 2025, our Investment Subsidies team advises clients on strategic decision-making regarding aid and status scheme applications. We support application processes for various aid schemes and consortium agreements, with particular expertise in securing prioritised project status.
